The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has had significant repercussions not only on the battlefield but also in the digital realm. Since the war began in February 2022, cyberspace has become a secondary front where both nations, along with their allies and independent actors, engage in cyber warfare, information manipulation, and digital activism.

Major cyberattacks have targeted government websites, financial institutions, and infrastructure on both sides. Russian hackers, often state-sponsored, have been accused of launching destructive malware attacks and disinformation campaigns. In response, Ukrainian IT forces and international hacker groups like Anonymous have conducted retaliatory operations, defacing websites and leaking sensitive data from Russian sources.

Social media has also played a critical role in shaping public perception. Both governments have used platforms like Twitter, Telegram, and Facebook to share updates, rally support, and counter enemy narratives. At the same time, false information and propaganda have spread rapidly, making it harder for users to distinguish fact from fiction.

The war has led to increased censorship, internet restrictions, and digital surveillance, particularly in Russia. Western tech companies have withdrawn or limited operations in the region, further isolating the Russian internet from the global digital ecosystem.

Overall, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has highlighted the growing importance of cyber capabilities in modern warfare and raised urgent questions about digital sovereignty, cybersecurity, and freedom of expression in times of crisis.
